He was the son of Andrew MacLaren, a Labour Member of Parliament who was a staunch advocate of Henry George.〔(MacLaren Foundation web site )〕 Schooled at Rutlish School in Wimbledon, MacLaren later became attracted to the law and trained as a barrister.
